Did you know that Vilnius University's motto is "Hinc itur ad astra," which translates to "From here to the stars"? Every year for 445 years, thousands of students have come to Vilnius with the aspiration of reaching for the stars. These young people bring with them fresh ideas and boundless energy, contributing to the vibrancy and richness of Vilnius. Therefore, celebrating the birthday of this esteemed institution is an unparalleled event, unlike any other! So how can you join the fun?

On April 8, Martynas Mažvydas’ “Catechism”, the first printed Lithuanian book, will be on display at Franciszek Smuglewicz Hall of VU Library. The tradition of showing the original copy of the book every year for a day gives a perfect opportunity for the general public to get a closer look at this significant piece of our cultural heritage.

On April 13, the VU Culture Centre invites you to the concert of the VU Chamber Orchestra “Returning Generations” in St. John’s Church. Every year, the VU Chamber Orchestra celebrates VU’s birthday by giving its community a concert, which it organizes with former members of the orchestra - VU alumni. This is one of the rare cases when even several generations of the VU community play at the same time, and the chamber orchestra turns into a symphony orchestra of more than fifty musicians.

New Museum Alert!

Be sure to visit the brand new museum - The Castellan’s House (or Pilininko namas). It is the newest exhibition unit of the National Museum of Lithuania, presenting Lithuania’s history, culture, and the people who contributed to the country’s development. We think it's an especially interesting concept since it’s going to introduce visitors to the key ideas that have shaped Lithuania’s identity from ancient times to the present day. The aim is to geographically cover the ever-changing past of Lithuanian history, focusing more on the core of the country. Our guides have high hopes for this museum!

Where? Arsenalo str. 1, in the courtyard

When? Tuesday to Sunday from 10 AM 6PM

How much? Adults – 6,00 € , but there are discounts for students, pensioners, teachers.

Physics faculty days!

Fidi 2024 physics faculty days vilniusPhoto by FiDi organisers

Known as FiDi by locals, it's one of the biggest student festivals in the city. Don’t be startled if on April 13th you see a huge dinosaur named Dinas outside your window - it means the traditional parade has just started! Students, alumni, and all science geeks will march through Gediminas Avenue to the Faculty of Philology of Vilnius University. Wait, Philology, not the physics faculty? Locals will explain to you that this is the only time of year when physics students, usually boys, have enough courage to ask philologists, usually girls, out on a date. Of course, this is an old stereotype. There are many women in STEM in Lithuania and many men in philology, and you will definitely see that reflected in the parade. But Gediminas Avenue is a good place to have a parade - so why not. So join Dinas, that giant dinosaur, and witness vintage cars, the Lithuanian Police Representative Brass Orchestra, liquid nitrogen, an endless sea of flags, a bunch of chanting Fidists, and much more.

Where? Gediminas av.

When? April 13th, 3PM
