Shortest night of the year midsummer Vilnius Jonines Photo by Vilnius with Locals

Whatever you call it, Lithuanians love the shortest night of the year. Before Christianity, this summer festival in Lithuania was called Rasos. People believed that herbs picked on this night and special rituals could bring good luck for the whole year. After Lithuania became Christian, Rasos changed to Joninės, because it happens on St. John’s Day. But many old traditions stayed the same: lighting bonfires and jumping over the flames, making flower and herb wreaths, and looking for the magical fern blossom in the forest at night. According to old stories, if you find the fern blossom, you will get special powers – like great wisdom, talking to animals, or even eternal happiness.

Not in Vilnius on the magical night? No worries! You can join free educational events in June at the Vilnius Tourist Information Centre. Learn how this special tradition connects nature, fire, and legends.

The Rasos Festival in Vilnius is traditionally held in Verkiai Palace Park. Bring a picnic, wear a flower wreath, and enjoy the linden-scented evening with your friends and family. You will see and join many old Lithuanian traditions—picking herbs, making wreaths, dancing in circles, singing old songs (sutartinės), and floating wreaths on the river. The event will include folk groups from Vilnius, traditional musicians, herbal experts, and fortune-tellers. A small herbal market will also be open.

Midsummer celebration in Kernavė 2026

If you have time, we suggest visiting Kernavė for one of the most special Joninės (St. John night celebrations) festivals in Lithuania. The first celebration here was held in 1967 by local ethnography and folklore enthusiasts. It was based on deep historical research to bring back old pagan traditions from before Christianity. This love for Lithuanian culture and traditions later helped the country get back its independence in 1990.

The celebration will last all day and night with many events: a market, traditional rituals, fun games, and folk musicians performances. You are invited to watch fire lighting, dance under the stars, float wreaths on the Neris River, welcome the sunrise, and wash in the early morning dew.

At the hill forts of the Kernavė Archaeological Site and in the Pajauta Valley by the River Neris:

5PM Gathering of Midsummer herbs (Kupoliavimas) with a herbalist in the Pajauta Valley
7PM Wreath-weaving, herb magic, and tea on the Castle Hill (Pilies kalnas) hill fort
7:45PM Festive procession of folklore ensembles along the Kernavė town avenue
8PM Ceremonial gates at the foot of Castle Hill
8.20PM Ritual circle dances, games, and folklore ensemble performances on Castle Hill
9.40PM Sunset ritual on Castle Hill
10.20PM Lighting of the altar fire at the foot of the Altar Hill (Aukuro kalnas) hill fort
11PM Lighting of the great bonfire and traditional elevated wooden fires (stebulės) on the hill forts
11.20PM Night dancing (Naktišokiai) on Castle Hill
Midnight Floating of wreaths down the River Neris, lighting of the riverside bonfire, and folklore concert programmes
03AM Jumping over the bonfire on Castle Hill
04.30AM Greeting the rising sun and washing with the first morning dew on the Mindaugas Throne (Mindaugo sostas) hill fort and in the Pajauta Valley
